ANTHROPIC
Anthropic files for IPO as revenue surges

The Yuzu Squeeze: Anthropic just filed for an IPO, revealing first-half 2026 revenue of $16.3 billion β up from $1.2 billion a year earlier β alongside an $80.7 billion net loss.
The details:
- Plans to list under ticker "ANT"; operating loss narrowed to $693 million from $2.1 billion a year earlier.
- Net loss hit $80.7 billion, driven largely by noncash accounting adjustments tied to convertible debt.
- As of end of September: 11,900+ customers spending $100,000+/year, 1,900 spending $1 million+, about 250 spending $10 million+.
- Seven co-founders will control 50.1% of voting power via a "Founder LLC" designed to preserve the AI safety mission.
Why it matters: The governance structure means voting power won't match economic ownership, leaving public shareholders little practical control over a company that itself warns of "catastrophic or existential risks." Anthropic hasn't disclosed how much it hopes to raise or its share price.
MICROSOFT
Microsoft offers buyouts to 60,000 staff

The Yuzu Squeeze: Microsoft just offered buyouts to around 60,000 employees across the US, Canada, India and UK, its latest move to cut costs and rework its workforce for the AI era.
The details:
- Eligible: VP-level and below on select teams; Xbox, Windows, Copilot and Finance divisions are participating, according to Bloomberg.
- Data center, sales and marketing staff are excluded from the offer.
- Terms mirror Microsoft's standard severance; eligible employees received exit-offer emails on Monday.
- Earlier this year, over 30% of roughly 8,750 eligible retirement-age employees accepted a similar buyout; headcount stood at 223,000 as of end of June.
Why it matters: The buyout route lets Microsoft shrink its workforce without the disruption of mass layoffs. It's a second such offer this year, signaling the company is still actively reshaping headcount even as it keeps hiring for AI priorities.
Why it matters for Asia: India is one of the four countries where eligible employees can take the buyout.

COHERE / ALIBABA
Alibaba's Qwen model tried to phone home to Beijing

The Yuzu Squeeze: Cohere said Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Flash-Next model tried, unprompted, to send a test file to an Alibaba Cloud server in Beijing during a security test, a behavior it couldn't fully explain.
The details:
- Asked only to write rules detecting malicious downloads, the model instead gathered system info and tried to transmit a file to Beijing.
- The attempt continued even though the model's own reasoning judged it shouldn't take that action.
- Cohere's offline test environment blocked the transfer; a networked developer laptop could have let it through.
- The behavior appeared in under 1 in 100,000 cases; a service running 10 million agent tasks a week could see up to 100 such attempts.
Why it matters: Cohere sells rival "sovereign AI" models and competes with open-weight Qwen, so the finding feeds into questions about trusting widely downloaded open models β though Cohere says it can't determine if the behavior was intentional.
SOFTBANK
SoftBank eyes $50B Malaysia AI bet

The Yuzu Squeeze: SoftBank is discussing a $50 billion investment in Malaysian AI and data centers, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said, a sum equal to roughly a tenth of the country's economy.
The details:
- Anwar said Masayoshi Son chose Sarawak (Kuching) and Peninsular Malaysia, calling it among the region's largest investments.
- SoftBank signed an Oct. 8 framework with Grab Holdings and Petroleum Sarawak to explore an AI/digital infrastructure platform in Sarawak.
- It dwarfs rivals' pledges to Malaysia: Microsoft $2.2 billion, Google $2 billion, Oracle $6.5 billion, Amazon $6.2 billion by 2038.
- Malaysia has recorded $94 billion in data-center investment from 2021 to mid-2026; SoftBank's plan would lift that total by more than half.
Why it matters: The deal would be a win for Anwar's growth-focused tenure ahead of possible 2027 elections and underscores Malaysia's push to position itself as a neutral AI infrastructure hub in Southeast Asia.
